South Carolina Clubs
Part V - Friday, December 21
In
South Carolina you essentially have at least three kinds of Clubs: Premier, Challenge & Classic. The differences between the clubs can be generally measured by the quality and depth of its players, teams, facilities, administration and coaches. The following is not a ranking of clubs, but merely a classification! Some clubs are not in pursuit of that Premier Club status and provide a fantastic service for their members albeit at the Challenge or Classic level!
Premier Clubs
CESA, Columbia United FC, Bridge FA
Challenge Clubs
Coast FA, Mount Pleasant SC, Carolina FC
Classic Clubs
Lexington, Aiken, Upstate Soccer Alliance
Note: The clubs listed, as well as the other clubs throughout SC, most likely have certain aspects of their organization that span the different categories (Premier, Challenge, Classic) and thus the above is more of a general classification rather than a specific evaluation of any one aspect.
Members
The size of clubs varies considerably. The largest clubs in the state like CUFC and CESA have in excess of 2,500 members. There are a few medium to large sized clubs that range in the 500-2000 member category, whilst the majority of clubs have less than 500 members.
Note: Both CFC and USA have less than 500 members. Spartanburg Arsenal has less than 50 members.
Staff
Very few clubs have full time administration or coaching staff. The clubs that currently have full time staff running their organizations in South Carolina are:
Piedmont: CESA & Carolina FC
Midstate: ---
Coastal: Summerville SC / Bridge FA, Mount Pleasant SC
Facilities
Almost every club in
South Carolina is dependent on utilizing fields from outside sources such as Parks & Recreation, public and private schools, churches, etc. Some clubs have exclusive rights to their local fields. The following clubs have purchased land and developed their own facilities:
Piedmont: CESA,
Carolina FC & Upstate Soccer Alliance
Midstate : Columbia United FC
Coastal: Summerville Soccer Club
Information regarding Coaching and Teams will be covered over the next few days!
Note: If I have left any club off the staff and facilities list please let me know.
